Why then did she not participate in the big spectacle?
Well, the Grand Champion of the previous show is
excluded from competing for a year! But, Sakai played it MR PAN ZHI CHENG
smart. He brought her to the show and showed her in a
perfect condition that all other Koi fell short of. 99cm of CELEBRATES HIS
pure beauty. Above the vat hung a sign indicating that
this Kohaku will be auctioned at the S.F.F. auction at the WIN HELPED BY A
end of this year. The Shinkokai being a subtle way to
                             bring this to everyone’s attention.
       RUMOUR JOYFUL CROWD
Rumour has it that during the show there were already
HAS IT THERE bids in excess of 100,000,000 Yen. That is no less than

WERE BIDS just over 755,000 Euros (£670,000) for one Koi! But
Sakai did not give up and played smartly. Soon he will
IN EXCESS OF let all those candidates get together in an auction house
and they can determine the value of this Koi among
£670,000 themselves. And of course, that will bring a shockwave
                             through the Koi world again!
Sakai was once again the big winner of this show.
Not only did he breed the numbers one and two, but
also immediately gained all publicity for the large
S.F.F. auction that will take place in Hiroshima in
                             October 2018.

So only, and only ‘Hallelujahs’ in Tokyo? No,
unfortunately not. In a vat in the ‘Dream Koi’ section,
near to that of Sakai, Narita san displayed a so-called
‘short body Koi’. A Koi that can best be described as a
Koi who “has his tail fin on his shoulders.” Totally
deformed, totally misplaced. In protest, I have not
photographed this Koi, because if this is a new trend, it
goes against the understanding of our beautiful hobby.
Are we really waiting for the first “long fin short body
Koi?” or “Koi with telescopic eyes?” Hopefully this was
a one-off. Hopefully, common sense will prevail.

Space does not permit me to show you the numerous
beautiful entries and prize winners. I have included a
few of the major winners, but the big winners, Kokugyo
and the very best in every variety will soon be available
on the NVN’s YouTube page. There you will be able to
see them on the big screen.
