Sunday and I managed to get a relatively decent photo
then. Also on Sunday I showed the Koi to Yuzuru
Konishi one of the ZNA judges of the International
Division. He was impressed. He discussed its lustre, the
intensity of colour, the finish of the Kiwa and Sashi and
the pattern without once mentioning the unusual pattern
around the eye. I’m guessing that’s an Oriental
viewpoint. I think any Westerner could not have talked
about the Koi without giving the eye a mention whereas
he found its allure in almost every other area.
For the rest of the time at the weekend I was in and out
of the ZNA Seminar Hall when the subjects and time

Koi on Winner’s Row. For reasons mentioned above
some of the so-called Best in Variety’s were not
exemplary specimens so I sacrificed looking at them to
concentrate on the Major Awards, the Best in Size
(Kokugyo) and the Group-prizes and I think I eventually
saw them all.
Although this was my third time at the show I still
haven’t figured out exactly how to absorb the whole
thing to my satisfaction. I guess that means I will have
to go again.
