Back to the taxi rank and our next port of call, the
Imperial Palace, mercifully much quieter because the
grounds are so enormous that you could probably lose
a football crowd in them. In the past, whole armies
would march on these grounds, which were certainly
on a scale to accommodate them. The timberwork on
the buildings was beautiful, the eaves picked out in
gold leaf and heavily carved. Difficult to imagine how
long it must have taken to do the work with the tools
available all those years ago. The grounds contained a
