lined with fascinating shops. The view of Kyoto from the
front of the temple was spectacular, but to reach the
best viewing area for the floodlit maples after sunset,
we would have had to pay a fee to walk through the
temple and then battle our way along the road on the
other side for quite some distance. We could see that
the road was already lined with people four and five
deep. The consensus amongst our group was that it
was not worth trying to get there, and we remained for
some time alongside the temple wall at the front of the
building, overlooking the ravine. Ian, John and I decided
